Environmental justice is the fair treatment and meaningful involvement of all people, regardless of race, color, national origin, or income, in the development, implementation, and enforcement of environmental laws, regulations, and policies. It’s about making sure that everyone has equal access to a healthy environment where they live, learn, and work.
The concept of environmental justice emerged from the recognition that many low-income communities and communities of color are disproportionately affected by environmental hazards. These communities often live closer to industrial plants, waste disposal sites, and other sources of pollution, leading to higher rates of health problems like asthma, cancer, and heart disease.
Environmental justice seeks to address these disparities by ensuring that no group of people, especially those who are already marginalized, bears an unfair share of the negative environmental impacts of industrial, governmental, and commercial operations or policies.
Environmental justice isn’t just about the environment; it’s also about social justice and human rights. When we fight for cleaner air, safer water, and healthier neighborhoods, we’re not just protecting the planet—we’re protecting the health and well-being of our most vulnerable community members.
Consider this: nearly one in four children in Lynn lives with asthma, a condition often exacerbated by air pollution. Many of these children live in neighborhoods with higher pollution levels due to nearby highways or industrial facilities. By advocating for environmental justice, we’re working to ensure these children can breathe clean air and live healthy lives, regardless of where they live.
At Lynn Community Health Center, we recognize the strong connection between the environment and overall health. That’s why we’re committed to promoting environmental justice as an integral part of our mission. We advocate for policies and practices that reduce environmental risks, increase access to green spaces, and promote sustainable living for all community members.
Our commitment goes beyond providing healthcare; it extends to addressing the root causes of health disparities, including those related to environmental factors. We believe that everyone has the right to a healthy environment, and we’re dedicated to making this a reality for all residents of Lynn.
